SOUTHERN MAORI MISSION.
The missionary (Mr J. I. Monfries) recently engaged by the Southern Maori Mission Committee of this city for evangelistic work amongst t)i9 Maoris of the South Island 'has already visited a large number of places in Otago and Southland. He has lately been working in. Colac Bay, the Bluff, and Stewart Island. Ho has received much encouragement, and has also had much ready help sympathy extended to him iv many places. A quantity of suitable literature, printed in the Maori language, has been distributed with great acceptance in tho variou3 " kaiks." The hon. treasurer of this mission is Mr Ernest Rosevear, of the Bible Depot, to whom all donations should be forwarded, and will be acknowledged.
The Auckland East Christian Convention are protesting against running goods trains on Sunday.
The army returns give some interesting particulars as to the nationality of our " Tommy Atkinses." More than threefourths of the number are English, 26,500 are Iriah, and about 16,500 Scots. Some 2500 are given as " unknown," and 142 are described a3 " foreign."
