LUCKY ARROW BOYS.

THEY STRIKE IT RICH IN WESTRAEIA.

£20,000 WORTH OF GOLD IN SIGHT.

Among those who have done well in "Wes* tralia- (gays the Southland Ngwb)' are three Arrow young- men — Albert Travis (a son of Mr Thomas Travis, an old Lake, resident, bub-~ now living in Invereargill), Samuel Hood (a, pan of Mi-s Hood, who recently met her deatb through a lioito and trap in which she was driving going over a precipice neas. Atrow}> and Harry Parsons. They sold the Djarnegie quartz mine for several thouaand pounds, and then, secured the Carnage South' mine, from which sensatioual yields of gold were reported! in a lenenfc cable. \Yo take the following additional particulars from a correspondent of a Cocilijardie paper: — The short wire- telegraphed you re the wonderful development at iho Carnage South mine caused. aiv immense' M.wsation in Coolgardie on the arrival of' the» iCalgoorlio Miner, t'Safc bqing: the first intimation the general public, had'SJf the news. A. large crowd oi people visited Mr Glowrey's^ Eayal Hotel, and inspected the. large liunp of g°ld, in addition- to some beautiful, speci? mails', whicli "were much admired, and excite— menl ran high. After being, inspected by, a. large number, tho lump of solid gold was lodged in the bank for safe keeping. Tha circumcf-aiicea of the find are as follow: Between 12 and 18 months ago the Carnage and Carnage South leaaee (two blocks of. 24 acres' csch). whicli had been previously worked by Mr W. K. Wilson, wero sold to a syndicate of four, comprising Messrs Traviß, Hoody iJranfc, and Parson?, for the, small amn of £5. After working the Carnage for a time they Fold the lease for £3330. They still, however, had the Carnago South, which the party worked. They rank thrco shafts, in two of which they found good gold. Some of their* specimens wero exhibited at the Ooolgardio Exhibition. In the bhaft where them latest rich discovery has been made sinking was continued to a depth -of 80ft, where a reef 35ft wide w.is struck. In. the centre of the reef there was- a phenomenally rich shoot of almost' pure gold. Mr l?raser remarked that it was the richest ever ncen, in his opinion, in any r»f the colonies. A, crosscut: into the ree£ was put in, and as tVio rich stone w«s- taken away it was packed into two portmanteaus. - Threo trips liiwe been made into Coolgardia during the past couple of months with tho gold which had been previously dollied, and then-, smelted. The iivst two lot 9 were kept very quiet, and the one wliieh was brought in- last, amounting tn betwnen 850oz and 900oz, was tho third. The three lots amount to X in all about ISOGoz. Wifclr what has been left there to be dolltsd. Mr Travis reckonsrthafc the 850oa to SOOoz will be increased to llOOoz. In addiiion to this a crushing of a parcel' of 60 or 70 tons is to be put through, which, it i 3 reckoned, is certain 1 to go between lOoa to 15oz t« the lon. The stone left afc present in tha rich shoot is looking betterthan'any yet taken out; and Sir Travis is strongly of opinion that; there, is at present fully £20,000 worth of gold in Blight. Rather an amusing incident- in con- ■ naction with the lump brought in is that before it left the Carnage il was weighed "vith a bag of flour. Tho four interested are all well-known on the fields, and no one begrudges them their luck. It is considered that this find will give a fillip to the development of mines around Coolgardie. The Carnage is situated, about 41 milus north of Coolgardie.
