POMAHAKA DOWNS.
. Deoembcr 11.—The weather during the past fortnight has been very mixed. We had some ' very hot days, followed by thunder, lightning, and rain. Last Saturday week there was a "" severe hailstorm, which seemed to travel in a line. It struck the sections of two of our settlers at the lower end. One of them had 1 a paddock of oats, which were in the shot •I)lade, completely cut to the ground, and where at one time there appeared to be a promising crop the red caith is about all that can be seen; whilst the adjoining settler ,had a crop of grass all cut and lashed about. The settlers on either** Bide of these two unfortunates -were not affected. , Settlement.—The vacant sections are all being put up again. I heard of some intending settlers looking at the ground, but the amount of the improvements seemed to frighten them. I am glad to hear "that-the Government contemplate making a reduction in some form. Sickness.—Some short time ago I mentionedthat Mr William Mitchell was in .veiy bad health, land haU gone to tho hospital for treatment. After a few weeks there he returned to his faun, but he was far fvoni well. The - effects of the disease—Grave's disease —are very severe. This at one time big, strong man is now like a walking skeleton. He returned to the hospital last week.
