TABLE TALK.
Monday Afternoon
I must remind my readers of the Horticultural Society's Rose show on the 20th inst., and warn them that if they intend competing in the table decoration class they cannot take too much " thought for the morrow," for I know of some very clever brains already devising most lovely combinations for the society's Challenge trophy. As to the decoration for a wedding breakfast table* that should £ive some lovely effects.
to friends there. I had hard work to keep it, and several ladies sent for copies. i " I was so much interested in the discussion on the ' Higher Education of Women,' and thought some of the papers so clever. 1 Why should higher education unlit us for marriage? Besides, it is clear we cannot all be married ; then by all means let those who can earn their own living by the advantages of education do so. I think men do nob like to see it ; not only because of the keen competition it causes, but because they love us to be entirely dependent on them. Every right-minded woman as well as man loves independence. . . . What do you think of the Transvaal question, dear Emmeline? It is like holding up a red rag to a bull to a certain class of thinkers, who consider the Boer a very ill-used person. But whichever side is right, my heart is sore at the thought of war. Fancy 60,000 men despatched from all points with the deliberate intention of murdering their fellows ! 1 think those Uitlanders have a great deal to answer for. " Now. dear Emmeline, with much love to you. and kind remembrances to my kind friends and club mates, I will conclude, and remain, — Your sincere friend, "A GRANDMOTHER."
