SOUTHLAND A. AND P. SHOW.

(Br Otm SPEcrAE Refohteh.) . mVERCARGILL, December 12. The Southland Metropolitan, A. and P. As- ' sociation's annual summer show opens , here to-day, but there was only a moderate attendance, confined chiefly to exhibitors. The i weather, though fine, was unpleasantly windy, , but promises better for to-morrow — the. Peoj pie's Day. The entries exceed those ot last ' year. The only stock judged to-day were cattle and sheep. Ayrshires were the most striking feature in the cattle class, being the best exhibits both as regards numbers and quality ever seen at this ghow, which is saying a great deal. The shorthorns were not numerous, but of rare quality, and the same can be said of the Polled Angus and Hereford. The cressbreds and milking- cattle- are , good, and so are the fat stock. There are 134- ■' entries in the shoep classes, comprising some of they Best and most valuable sheep in the colony to a few in the fat-pen class which would' discredit any New Zealand show, tn Lincolns, Messrs J. B. Sutton and" F. Sutton -were the only exhibitors,- but their exhibits j included gome of the same, sheep which" had taken first, and second honours at the late Christchurch show, where- the competition : was really keen. Border Leicesters from ; Messrs J. M'Croetie's, M'Kercher Bros., R. "Grieve, and others' flocks made a prominent ; show. The progeny of the importations of | .Mr M'Crostie- ti few years ago were conspicuous to-day by their finely-developed carcases and heavy fleeces, and' secured the ; highest and most numerous award?, llomney ] Marsh were well represented* by the entries of tlie Hon. Mathew Holmes, J. B. Logan, W. J. Johnston, Jame3 Gardner, and others. Messrs John Reid and Son? were the only exhibitors of Shropshire Downs. The Cheviots, which came in for a lot of admiration from i the general public, were all from the two-well-known Southland flocks of Messrs Helclenand' Awdrey (RedclifF) ancl the Hon. Mathew i B.olmcs (Castle Rock), and reference to the j prise-list* below will suow that the Kedclift j sheep secured, most of the awards, including the championship. The fat-sheep pens included some very heavy weights in splendid 1 condition, but very few that could be classed j really prime mutton, while some were quite I I unfit for show sheep,. For the pen of 10 ! wethers, long-woolled dr crossbred, -most suiti able for the frozen meat trade, weight not less than 501b or more than 651b, H class for which, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company offered a prize at £5 ss, besides other special prizes, there were several entries, but the judge considered all were so much over the maximum- weight that no award was made. , . \. Though grave olpubts were entertained in j the forenoon re>the weather, it turnediout a?.; fine an- afternoon as could have been desired,, j consequently there was a great attendance of ; the- public— not far short of 10,000. About ; £320' was taken at the gates, which, after al- I lowing for half -price tickets and members' and J exhibitors' passes, will nearly 'account lor j that number. Great crowds came 1 in' j from the country by the Orepuki, Riverton, NightcarJ3, Lumsden, and Clinton trains, for , which very inadequate preparation was made i by the Railway department. Very different ' \i as the forethought and vigilance of the asso- I i Nation Ecoivitary (Mr AY. R. F. Cuthbertson),. to whom much v.as left to manage, and managed with ability and attentiveness, which ' made matters run bmootlily and the show the success it is admitted on all sides to have been. Tho association were fortunate in obtaining " the services of practical, independent men , from a distance for judge?. Mr Neil Flemirg, of Oamaru, judged the draughts, and though he did not please everybody- and is not the man' to attempt such a ridiculous feat, there was a consistency of type in his awards j throughout every class which showed he was no novice at his business or dubious about his. own ideals of a norfact draught horse. Mr "W. Buckley, of Duneunclel, Canterbury, and , Mr E. Gates (the former as judge of roadsters, [ and harness horses and" the latter of thorough- j j breds and light hacks) exercised great care in ; ' pelecting only souud, unblemished horses for j honour, a course which ga.ve general mtisfact.ion to all who take a real, live, intelligent j interest in this class of stack. After bo many j I good draught horses have been sent out of the district, and the cry that our' breeders were parting with all their best. mares, it was really surprising to see so many good animals in the ring to-day. C'ompetij tion was keen in most clacses, except the-geld-ings, which, with the spring-van classes, were the only 'really medium classes amongst th'o. draughts. There may. of course, be a difference of "opinion as W the merita of different animals, but when winners at Dunedin and' other northern ghows were beaten, as was the ease ' to-day, it shows how good- those werewith which they were, competing. On thei whole, the mares m all classy were much better than, the stallions or geldings. Some of the young animals are palpably pnffering from over-kindness, the yearling fillies in. particular showing the effects of too much forcing. The teams of mare 3 call foi special mention. Messrs Blakie, Drain, and Charters showed teams that it would be difficult to I neat in any part of ,the world. Mr Blakie' s.' < winning team was well matched, and the. mares were all young and of his own breeding by his old sire Herd Laddie. The light horses, on the whole, were good, excepting thoroughbreds, which never take a prominent place at this show. The stallions in all the light-horhe classes were only of medium quality, but the working sort, were first class. There werei some smart active horses in all the hackney ' classes, and the harness horsea were good, while the ponies were the best we have had for many years. The implement and machinery class comprised 281 entries. To Enumerate or comment as briefly as possible on euch would take columns of space. I shall, therefore, only give a list of the various etands. Following is the prize Hat : — HORSES. DHA.UOIIT. Judge: Mr N^il Fleming (Oamaru).
