BROAD BAY.

December 4. — The Wesleyan Sunday school here held their anniversary social a few days ago. The Rev. T. G. Brooke, of South Dunedin, presided. The entertainment consisted of lantern pictures, with songs and recitations by the children, followed by light refreshments. The teachers, assisted by the home missionary, Mr Belton, succeeded in making the meeting very pleaiant and instructive. The attendance at the same time was very satisfactory. Improvements. — Several new housvs have been erected, both here and at Portobello, during the last few months, but apparently they are only intended for their owners' occupation during the summer months. The new steamer was to be ready for the holidays. If she is, her builders will have to put forth a little more energy than they have shown lately. The district Road Board has approved of plans, and will in a few days call for tenders, for the widening of the beach road from near the junction at Anderson's Bay road on towards the bridge, and fronting the properties of Judge Williams, Mrs Cutten, and Mrs Haggitt. That part of the road ia extremely narrow, and much in need of widening. Cyclists will find (after they have paid tho toll) the road much improved from N.-E. Harbour towards Portobello.

The Camp Estate. — Friday last saw tho last of the clearing sales. Tho interior of the building has been almost wrecked by tho remoral of everything removable, such as mantelpieces, grates, carved woodwork, etc. Apparently the once- beautiful residence .and grounds of the late Hon. Mr Laraaoh will -soon be an artistic ruin, the abode, probably, pi

"moroporks" ,and ghosts.' " "ThY estate is" "aaf cording to preliminary notice in "the - ■ DailJ Times, to be shortly. cut,up into dairy farms.

" Elections. — Before this appears in print th« fate of the candidates will be sealed. What« ever may have been the sins of the Ministry, our old member has been a good representative of his district, and if he gets justice will bj6 re-elected. His opponent, Mr White, has ths advantage of a long residence and connection with the local bodies of the Peninsula, and is certainly the favourite hereabouts. Season. — About aJI 'the accommodation for visitors has now been engaged, and a good sea* son iB looked forward to. The spring, now merging into summer, is a late one. Until a fortnight ago, growth was very slow. Since then there has been plenty of rain, with some heavy thunderstofins, which has brought the grass along splendidly. Still, there is a want of sunshine to ripen the potatoes, peas, etc., although the former have been sent regularly to market for some weeks back.
