Notes from Wakatipu. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Arrowtown, December 2.—The clean-up for last month of the Gleurook battery gave lOloz 13dwt 18gr smelted gold from SO tons crushed. The prospects in ihe mine are reported aa irn- | proving slightly, but so far the* quantity of stone in sight is Jiroited. It would appear that this mine is passing through one of those critical stages which have frequently been a fea- , turc in the history of this lode.' "Breaks in the j stone are met with, then the quartz makes again in small binds, which, as previous crush- . ings have proved, and the present one has conI firmed, arc very rich, and by-and-bye the lode | makes again, ti good body of stone coining in. Such lias been the experience for nearly 2400 ft j the lode has been followed into the mountain, and it is to be hoped that tho present ex- ! perience will turn out after the same manner.Mr W. Patton, the mine manager, who has had < many years' experience of the nature of this particular lode, and the Macetown reefs in ! general, will not fai! in solving the query in | the -present instance, should the lode follow previous examples. Good news is to hand from the Achilles mine, Lullendale. some splendid stone having been j struck in new country, which is likely to give } the mine a new lease of life. In the opinion ■ of men well qualified to judge, the real heart ' of the lode has never yet been touched by any .of the paities working the mine—namely, tho ' locality of the old original Otago Company, j where stone was first discovered to be highly : auTiierous by the early prospectors in 1863. j Some work was done, a battery, after the fa- I shioa of the time, was erected, a" goodly number ' ' of tons crushed, going about 2oz to the ton, I when Messrs Bullen Bros, became tho pur- ! chasers. The attention of the owners of the . mine was directed to other parts of tho lode, which have been worked in preference to the ' earlier workings. When the old Otago ! battery wa3 pulled down about 12 years ago, £600 worth of gold was collected from the site.
