The Rangitira (from Lyttelton, September 20), via Capetown, arrived in London on •Friday evening with her meat in good condition. The Papanui sailed from Gravesend on Saturday for Port Chalmers. The Ruahine sails from Plymouth on December 11 for Wellington. The Huddart-Parker Co.'s splendid s.s. JSS estralia, Captain 'A. Thorpe, from Meljbourne, v via Hobart and the Bluff, arrived alongside the Bowen pier at 5.40 a.m. on the 29th with 43 passengers and a large quantity of [general cargo for this port, and after waiting «or the tide, proceeded to Dunedin wharf. She left Melbourne on November 22. The e.B. Zealandia went down to Port Chalmers on Thursday, morning, and left .in the afternoon for Sydney, via Wellington. . The s.s. Mapourika was floated out of the graving dock on Thursday morning, and left Jthe Bowen pier in tho afternoon for Welling: ton direct. • % The Southland News, referring to the overdue schooner Wolverine, states tha-t Captain Xambert, of the e.s. Pukaki, has disposed of disquieting rumours to the effect that fwhen he passed the Wolverine she appeared /to be in some difficulty — or, as other versions ihad it, making signs of distress;— by distinct and emphatic denial. Ho states explicitly *hat on Friday, November 3, between 3, and Jl p.m. he passed a small fore-and-aft schooner .off Cape Saunders — that when abreast of the schooner the wind came up from the southward and she ran before it towards Otago Heads. He adds, "I saw nothing wrong with her; all her sails were set, and she appeared to be junder proper control. At no time did she show signals of distress." The Colonial Government steamer Hinemoa, from tho north, on her annual visit of inspection to the southern lighthouses, arrived at sPort Chalmers at 1.40 p.m. on Friday, and jwent alongside the Bowen pier to take in cargo. . The barque Akaroa, from Liverpool, via Wellington, arrived at 9 p.m. on Friday, and ,\ras berthed at the Rattray street wharf. The Akaroa left Liverpool on July 16, and had an uneventful voyage, arivhig at Wellington on the Bth ult. After discharging her Wellington cargo.; she. left again on the 27th ult. Sho Bxperienced light variable winds with fine weaiher down the coast,- and arrived as above. The Akaroa brings 800 tonKof cargo for Dunedin, after discharging which she loads wool here for London.

Tho e'.e. Westralia, from Sydney, via Auckland, arrived at the cross wharf at 3.35 p.m. on Sunday. She left Sydney on the 22nd ult., and arrived at Auckland on the 26th.

Departures: Thetis, barque, 1295; Napier, s.s., 48 (twice); Mono/wai, s.s., 2137; Mararoa, s.s., 1381; Invertoargill, s.s., 123; Mapoufika. s.s., 718; ZeaJandia, 8.6., 1735; Janet Nicoll, s.s., 496; Te Anau, s.s., 1028 ; Hinemoa, s.s., 286 ; Sarah and Mary, brigantine, 145; — tota 1 , 9395 tons.

After taking in stores, _the C.G.B. Hinemoa left Port Chalmers on Saturday at 9 a.m. for southern lighthouses. The ship Wellington, from London for thisjiort, passed Beachy Head on October 5. The U.S.S. Company's fine steamer Waikare, Captain H. J. Richardson, from Sydney, via Cook Strait, arrived at the Bowen pier at 8.40 a.m. of Saturday, and steamed pup to Dunedin on the tide. She brought 47 and 216 tons of general cargo for this port. The Waikare left Sydney at 2 j».m. of the 25th ult. After un absence of over six months the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's fine «tcamship Matatua returned to Port Chalmers »n Saturday afternoon, and was berthed at the ocean steamers' wharf at 5 p.m. The 'Matatua, which has met a succession of very lieavy weather all across the Southern Ocean, .comes into port in good order, and reflects great credit on Mr P. 0. Griffiths*, R.N.R., ncr chief officer. She is consigned to McPsrs Dalgcty and Co. (Limited), of this city, and brings over 5000 tons of weight and meaGttreineut cargo, of which &he has no le^s than 1500 tons for Dunedin. She is still commanded by Captain Burvill Holmes. The s.s.
