LONDON WOOL SALES.

(From Oun Special Cokeespondej.-t.) LONDON, October 6. AN ACTIVE D33MAND. WITH PRICES STEADY. Speaking generally the sales this week have shown little change from latit week, and all the features then enumerated have continued. If anything different can be mentioned, it i-s in the direction of more general buying by all sections of the trade, and particularly so by Continental representatives and in a less degree by America. French buyers have been very active, taking merinos in the grease with great avidity, several leading new clip Queensland marks falling to their bids. Then, too, Germany lias been compelled to throv off her unnatural reserve or else go without wqpl, and this has caused .things to continue very lively. Another factor is that the best merinos of the series have been offered since I last wrote, and this has caused everybody to be alert. Competition has been about equally divided between the home and the Continental buyers, but if anything sTorkshiremen have taken the heaviest weights. So far as prices go, there is no material difference from last week, save in heavy, wasty grea.<-ies of very doubtful yield, and these have shown some irregularity. Also very faulty, fatty scoured skin wools have hardly maintained last Keok'g extreme

rates, and this-is not at all to be wondered at. But for anything showing good growth and character the demand to-day is as keen as at any time this series, prices too showing the full standard of the rise-. Medium and fine crossbreds are selling most ravenously, especially the latter, the Continent seeking them as keenly as Bradford buyers. Every day large quantities are brought to the hammer, and it is surprising the few withdrawals there are. However, the general run of coarse crossbreds — greasy, scoured, and slipe — continue to sell rather irregularly, though American buyers are still taking liberally good conditioned parcels of both coarse and medium crossbreds. Summing up, there is a most active demand, and prices are steady, with no quotable changes. ' Closing letter next mail. Since writing the above there has been a distinct slowing down in the extreme values of the first ten days of the sale, and with tho exception of good combing grease and scoured values to-day may bo said to have declined 5 pei" cent, when compared with the best part of the series. The fact is Bradford buyers are about filled up for the present, and Germany especially has again been very much reserved, while American competition has dwindled down to nothing. This has taken, tho keen edge off the previous high valuea, though, last night wool was selling extremely wall again.

The condition of the home wool market this week is an interesting one, not on account of any amount of new business coming to hand, but because dealers and topmakers are now able to look over the ground they have just covered, and are forming opinions in regard to what has been and ia U) be done. The liveliest interest seems toy centre around the-noar future, .and a deadly Ftrugfgle is imminent. Are prices for ail qualities to go further forward? is the question of the hour among Bradford wool users, and while topmakers and merchants are demanding" higher rates to cover further increased cost, spinners sesm resolutely -determined to go no further. It seems to us that they must wait until there is a need on their part to buy, and then value 3 will have to bo properly adjusted. Consumption is still heavy, there is no want of work, and trade is as good aa ever. The following tablo shows the full course of values during the month just closed, and the figures given represent the general asking prices of merchants to-day: — j
