The Maori dredge sank in the Clutha Uo* day. The men found a difficulty in getting off the dredge before she went down. MOUNT LYELL MINING AND RAIL- " WAY COMPANY. MELBOURNE, November 27. ■ ' .At the half-yearly meeting' of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company it was announced that arrangements had been made for the sale, of their blister copper to a refining firm ab Baltimore. Ths agreement was considered exceedingly satisfactory. It was also stated thai) £24,000 had been set aside as the nucleus of a reserve fund. The expenditure on plant had now practically ceased. DAILY TIMES COMPANY'S MAP OP THE DREDGING RIVERS. Subscribers throughout the colony have now received the second sheet of the above very useful and comprehensive map. Tho first sheet comprised portion of tho Clutha River above Cromwell, the Molyneux from its junction with the Kawarau down to -the boundary line between 1 Vincent and Tuapeka counties, the Kawarau from its source to its junction with the Molyneux; the Manuherikia, and the Cardrona. The second sh?et has *three sections of ths Molyneux River, each traversing the entire length of the large sheet, and also the Waikaia, the Waiau, and the Waipori Rivers, and the | Waimumu stream. * The two sheets of the map have shown on I them the claims of no less than 167 registered companies, besides areas held by private persons, and they form a map which has evidently involved a lot of work in its compilation, and is as closely up to date as possible. Published at the very moderate price of 13s 6d, for the complete maps, well mounted, it is within reach; : of everyone interested in the great industry ' which has sprung into such prominence i» > Otago and Southland. ' SUNLIGHT GOLD DREDGING COM- / PANY. The first annual meeting of shareholders o£ the Sunlight Gold Dredging Company (Limited) was held on' Friday at the company's 'office,' Vogel street. A fair' number of shareholders; were present, Mr G. M. Grigg presided. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of. the report and balance sheet for the year "ended 31st October, congratulated the shareholders on the success of the company's first year of operations. During the period the dredge "had been working 6220z 6dwt 19gr of gold had been won, valued at* £239s 18s lOd, out of which the directors were enabled to pay two dividends of 2s per share each. The dredge is in thorough, repair and working satisfactorily, and he considered that next year's operations will be still more profitable than the past. Messrs J. C. Short and James Dick were elected directors to fill the vacancies on the board, and Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun., auditor for the ensuing year. MR JOHN WERNER DISCOVERS A MARE'S NEST. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I see that Mr J. Werner has again been indulging in his customary tirade of abuse of jme, somewhat grotesquely intermingled with, glorification of himself. On thfs occasion his text is from the reply of the Premier to a deputation at Gore, re the proclamation for mining -purposes of the Waikaka and other streams in that neighbourhood. Tlie Premier said Uet us hope unintentionally) that I had suggested the imposition of a royalty or gold duty to recoup the colony for the cost of such proclamation. I certainly made no such suggestion. Mr S. Inder expressed the willingnesß of certain dredging claim-holders to pay! such royalty if necessary. I corroborated Mi; Inder's remarks by saying that so much in earnest were many of the claim-holders in Waikaka that rather than permit the cost of proclamation to be urged as a bar to mining in. that locality, they would prefer to pay' royalty; .on the gold won. Individually -I expressed Aai opinion. I merely voiced the opinion of others, as evidence of bona fides. After the "premiers had finished .replying to the deputation, I drew attention to his having misunderstood my remarks. Your reporter evidently considered: the correction bo made as being unimportant ta the object of the meeting, and did not refer tq it in his report. For my own view of the question I would tefer anyone to my. speech in Hansard on th«
r second reading of the Loan Bill this year. I ; - there take the Government to task for not pro- | - viding- anything oulrof the million loan for the , cost of proclaim ing streams in Oiago and the " "West Coast. ' The records of the Vincent County Council Contain sufficient answer to Mr Werner's other reckless* statements. — I am, etc., W. FRASER. Arrowtown, November 25. THE GOLDEN ICON GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. - *" TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — In. your issue of date it is reported j that an extraordinary meeting of the Golden Run Gold Dredging Company is called to consider an offer for the purchase! of the company's property by a London syndicate. As a share- - holder I have received no such notice, but today I received a very curiously worded circular re the issue of 2000 shares as yet unallotted. The circular in question calls a, meeting of the shareholders for the 28th day of November for .the purpose of j 1. Considering and dealing with the 2000 un- ' ■ allotted shares held by the company, and to decide upon what terms and conditions they J shall be issued. : "52. To consider the advisability of rescinding . the following resolution, which was passed at. the annual general meeting, held on 17th October last, and if decided upon to rescind ' the same. The following is. the resolution above referred to : — " That the 2000 shares at present unallotted be issued to priginal paid-up shareholders (6000)- in proportion to their holdings." It may be in the recollection of your readers . that a few days after this resolution was passed I wrote to the Otago Daily Times and questioned its legality, and warned the directors • not to issue the stock pending legal proceedings. From, the tenor of the above circular I infer that the directors have discovered that > the resolution passed was illegal, and that the j ' shares could not be disposed of in thi3 way. \ Why then could they not frankly say so, and state that the business which would be placed before the shareholders was — 1. The rescinding of the resolution passed at the meeting of the 17th October, and 2. The allotting of the 2000 shares amongst the original and contributing sEare- i holders (9000) in proportion to their holdings. ' I am quite certain that any other method of disposing of these shaTes, or any attempt made • to confirm tha resolution of 17th October will be met with serious opposition, and inevitably j lead to litigation. — { .With regard to the question of selling the • company's property to an English syndicate, I think it pertinent to ask, if such is the case, why issue the new shares at all? That may be ay small matter, but it is to be hoped that shareholders will not part with their property — a ■ very valuable one — unless they get a very substantial price for it. — I am, etc. CONTSIBUTING SHAREHOLDER.
