CRICKET. NOTES BY SLIP.
In consequence of the unfavourable weather the Cup matches in Dunedin were not continued last Saturday.
Mr G. A. Tapper, secretary of the Cricket Council, has received a letter from Melbourne stating that a thoroughly representative Victoria team may visit New Zealand after the New South Wales intercolonial match in January is over, provided that terms can be agreed upon. The New Zealand Council offers £300 for the tour.
At a meeting of the Otago Cricketers' Association, last Friday, a tour of the colony by an Otago team was finally decided on. The team leave Dunedin on Wednesday, December 13, and proceed direct to Napier, where they will play their first match. They then go on to Auckland, and will take ■ Wellington and Canterbury on their journey back, playing Canterbury last of all. The Selection Committee have selected the following players to practise in view of the tour: — G-. Austin, Baker, Broad, Clarke,. A. Downes, T. Downes, Fisher, Hope, Johnston, Latham, Mackersy, Liggins, Kilgour, Webb, R. Wilkie, Williams, Siedeberg, Harkness. The Southland Cricket Association suggests dates towards the end of February for the interprovincial match Southland v. Otago.
The return match between the Hawea, and Wanaka Clubs was won by the latter by an innings and 47 runs. Scores : Wanaka, 112 (Anderson 26, M'Lennan 26, Ironside 15, Thomson 12, Perrow 10) ; Hawea 32 (Cairns 10) and 33.
A match was played last Thursday between the Oamaru B. and Capulet teams. Mowbray (the Oamaru captain) declared his innings closed with eight wickets down for 84 (Borton 26, Holmes 13, Ross 12/ Waddell 12,' Mowbray 10), leaving the Capulets about two hoiirs to make the required number of runs to win. This proved an error of jugment, as the Capulets succeeded in making 98 (Bee 29, M'Glue 18, Crawford 10, Mitchell 10).
The Low Road Port Chalmers defeated the High Road by two wickets and 1 run. The return match between the Papanui and Portobello Cricket Clubs was won by Papanui by an innings. Portobello, going in first, only scored 18 runs. Papanui replied with 52, of which J. Sheppard made 26. Portobello scorecl 24 in their second venture. J. Duckrnanton and J. Kyhon bowled well for Papanui, and W. Pearce and H. Ridley for Portobello.
The first century of the season in Auckland cricket was made on Saturday week by F. J. Olilson in a first-grade Cup match, when playing for Parnell against United. W. Mills put up the creditable score of 84 for Ponsonby in their match with North Shore, and Holland was run out for 83 when batting for Auckland against Gordon.
NEW SOUTH WALES V. QUEENSLAND. The New South Wales cricket team in their first innings made 640 runs. Queensland lost nine wickets for 149. Queensland's first innings realised 154- and the second 171. New South Wales won by an innings and 315 runs. BRISBANE, November 26. In the return- match New South Wales v. Queensland, the visitors have lost' eight wickets for 346. Farqiahar scored 85, and Trumper 77. VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. ADELAIDE, November 26. In the cricket match Victoria v. South Australia, the Victorians in their first innings made 360, of which Graham scored 118, M'Alister 52, and Trumble 50. South Australia has lost five wickets for 131 runs.
