THE GENERAL ELECTION.
INVERCARGILL, November 23.
Mr Kelly addressed the first meeting of ihis constituents to-night, the theatre being packed. He devoted a good deal of time to explaining why he, being a Liberal, did not Support the Seddon Government through thick and thin. He got a good hearing until he touched on the question of old-age pensions, ithe method of providing money for which he fcad opposed. At the close there was some confusion. The usual vote of thanks and confidence was proposed, to which there was an amendment that the mectiag had no confidence an Mr Kelly. The Mayor declared both carried on the voices, but on a demand for a chow of hands for the motion, he declared it carried. Our Invercargili correspondent telegraphs: 11 The prohibitionists have decided to run Mr (Murray for Awarua in opposition to Mr Mr John White addressed the "Waikouaiti ©lectors in the , schoolhouse hall, Higheliff, on Saturday evening, about 50 being present. Mr Alex. Stuart, chairman of the Peninsula Road Board, was in the chair. Mr Stuart introduced the candidate with eulogistic remarks upon his previous connection with the ■local governing bodie3 of the district, and expressed his pleasure in presiding upon an joccasion when Mr White was seeking the higher honour of representing the district in ■(Parliament. Mr White traversed most of the ground covered by his Port Chalmers epeech, also referred to, *nd explained, the Eushy Park purchase, contrasting the professions and practice of the"Hon. John M'Kenzie on the subjects of freehold tenure and 'large estates. At the conclusion of his address Mr White was accorded a hearty and /unanimous vote of confidence and thanks, on fthe motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Mr J. the Chairman suggesting that all those present should use their best endeayours to secure Mr White's return. Mr Arthur Morrison was on Monday nominated for the Caversham seat, his nominators !bsing David Stevenson, Robert William Rutherford, Jane Page, and Alice May Chetivr'n. Mr-W. C. Buchanan- has been nominated for ,fcho Wairarapa, seat.' Mr J. White addressed a meeting of Waikouaiti electors in the Sandymount School pn Monday evening. There were about 30 perpresent, Mr Wot. Dick being in the chair. Mr ■White spoke for about an hour and a-half, principally on the lines of the speech he delivered at Port Chalmere. At the conclusion ■Mr James Weipers moved a vote of thanks end confidence, which was seconded by Mr 7><ee, and carried with scclamation.
