CATLINS RIVER.
September 2. — The Owaka bachelors' ball was held in Paterson's Hall on Friday, September 1, when a very enjoyable evening was spent, the dance being attended by 72 couples. Dancing was kept up till daylight, and everyone went home convinced that the bachelors' ball is a treat not to be missed. Songs and step dances were rendered throughout the evening, and the local talent would gain applause from a far larger and more critical audience than ours. The ladies all wore evening dress, and looked so charming and pretty that I think it would be unjust to name any particular one, and to describe them all in detail would take more time and space than I have at my disposal. The music was all that could be desired, the time being perfect, and great praise is due to the committee for the able manner in which they carried out the different arrangements. The decorations being perfect, one might -be excused in thinking for a moment that one had entered fairyland. Mr Jones boiled the billy, and looked after the catering in his usual efficient manner. Messrs H. Latta and Anderson acted as M.C.'s, and everyone regrets that the bachelors' ball is a realisation and not an anticipation. — Occasional correspondent.
