Notes from Lyell. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LYELL, September 1.
Alpine.— The following is the Mine Manager's report: — "In No. 8 level the reef proved to be 3ft in width in the south end, and lft in tha north. The stone is rising as we drive north, and work here has been temporarily suspended. The reef contains a little gold. A start has been made to extend No. 9 level north fox, fiUinjg
in for the stopes below. Stoping has been continued above No. 10 level. The reef varies from 2ft to 4ft in width, and during the week there has been a slight improvement in its quality. Stoping has also been progressing at the back of No. 11 level. The reef ranges from 4ft to \ 14ft in width, and some of th^. stone is of fair quality. In the stopes north of the connecting uprise the reef is small and broken, but the stone is of good quality. The No. 11 level, north extension, has been driven ahead for a ' distance of 10ft, making a total distance north ' of the connecting uprise of 80ft. The reef is lOin wide, is of good quality, and has been carried along during the week, and besides this there are 2ft of broken quartz pug in the hanging wall, the width of the track being now 3ft. The quantity of stone sent to the battery is 230 tons."
