UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the council of the University of Otago was held on Monday. Present : Mr E. B.Cargill (vice-chancellor), Professor Sale, Professor Shand, Dr Hocken, Dr Burns, the -Jtev. A. Cameron, Messrs T. X: Sidey and S). R. White. Apologies were received for ithe absence of Mr Justice Williams and Mr G. G. Russell. The Vice-chancellor congratulated Professor • Sale and the Rev. Mr Cameron on their reappointment to the council. - The Finance Committee reported having * $>aseed for payment accounts .amounting to £636 158 3d. The credit balance at the bank twas £60 8s 2d. An offer had been received for sections 1 and 2 of the Castle street frontage of the reclaimed block, but as it was beJfcta O»o r«»arv« crio* fiW b* the Special
Committee its acceptance was not recommended. — The report was adopted. The following report, on honorary law lectureships was read by Mr Sidey: — The committee appointed in this matter report toihe Council of the University of Otago as follows: — 1. Having considered the question of the establishment of additional law lectureships, your committee affirm the desirability of additional provision being made for the teaching of law. 2. Your committee recommend the council before taking any further steps to communicate 'with the Law Society, submitting to it the pro- • posals contained in the next succeeding paragraph, and inviting its co-operation, and further asking it for a renewal of its offer as contained in its letter to the council of the 29 th June, 1889. • 3. Your committee suggest the following as subjects in respect of which lectureships might be established : —
1. Roman law. 2. International law. — 3. Equity. 4. Eeal and personal property. (5. Contracts and torts and recommend (a) That the council make arrangements for the purpose of securing the services . of those members of the legal profession who may be willing to offer themselves as honorary lecturers in any of the above subjects; (b) that lecturers giving a lull course of lectures be allowed -to charge -ordinary class fees, and lecturers, giving.- lectures' during the session 'to be';allowed to charge half fees ; (c) that attendance at these lectures and the passing" of the class examinations in connection therewith shall count either as a whole or a half subject (as the case may be) for the purpose of keeping terms for the 1111..8. degree. - The report -was received, and the desirability of additional provision being made for the teaching of law was confirmed. lhe whole matter was then referred back to the committee, to confer with the Law Society, and ascertain if the services of competent honorary leoturers could be obtained.
