GAMES.
The following game was played in the Victorian Championship tournament' and decided the championship. In this, the final tie, the first five games were drawn, and the sixth was won as under by Mr Brown, giving him the title and first prize. Game 5890.—" Whilter." Black— F. Salmon. White- F. Brownf
And after a few more moves Brown won. (a) In running over this game with Mr D. A. Brodie, he said, on playing 6 10, " Well, I shouldn't have played there. It looks to me like a. Black win by 9 14r Try it." Play went: 9 14, 22 8-b, 4 8, 18 9, 8 12, and against anything White tried Black won. (c) If 16 12>, 14, 18, 22 15, 23 26, 30 23, 6 9, etc., Black wins; or 22 17, 14 18, Black wins. — Brodie.
Game 589J.— "Wagrani."
lhis was the twenty-ninth game in the recent match between Freedman and Battersby. Battersby had the Blacks. For the game and notes we are indebted to the Draughts "World.
(a) Forms the opening, first played in the Wyllie-Martins match in 1864. Two years later Drummond gave two pages of play on it in Vol. II of his Fourth Edition, under the title Wagram. Drummond, like ourselves, seems to have taken a deep interest in the history of the wars of the first Napoleon — hence the opening being named in honour of one of his greatest victories over the Austrians. • (b) The game has proceeded according to Drummond up to this stage, but this is the weak spot in White's defence. The following, by Drummond, gives an equal game : —
(c) Battersby seems to have missed a win here. We give a diagram, with play in support of the ■win by J. Murray, West Kilbride, and W. Buchan, Glasgow: —

[White.]
Black to move and win.
(d) Up to this stage the play is by J. Murray, and the continuation was published \>y W. Buchan in the West Lothian Courier shortly after the match. (e^ If 22 17, then 31 26, 17 22, 26 17, 21 14, 15 10. Black wins. The two following games were played recently at Warrington between Messrs F. Dunne and J. Roberts : — Game 5892.—" Paisley."
(a) Unusual. (b) Weak ; 3-S would have been better. Game 5893 — " Edinburgh." Black— Mr Dunne. White— Mr Roberts.
(a) Generally considered as good as anything Black lms at command, though it did not find much favour nt the international match; 10 15 had tho preference. (v) 18 14 in a strong reply.
(c) J. Hynd, junr., played 24 19 against G*Buchanan, with a drawn result.
