HOCKEY.
About three weeks ago a meeting was held in Mr G. Sievwright's office to form a Dunedin Hockey Club, --i-jout 20 gentlemen attended, and the idea was taken up with such enthusiasm that at present the club has 30 members. A scratch match was arranged last Saturday on Tahuna Park jetween teams of 11 a-side, and captuined by Messrs C. Butterworth and H. L. Tupley. The ground was in good order, and the game fast and full of excitement. At the hit oft A. Thomson made a vigorous dash, and, after some pretty play, secured first goal for Tapley's side. Butterworth then took Ihe ball up to his opponents' afoal, but to no purpose, and again Thomson, attacking strongly, with the assistanco of R. Sise, scored a second goal. Nothing further was scored at half-time. In the second spell Butterworth changed his tactics, and his men, being in better training, soon pressed their opponents. A quick stroke by Denniston scored a goal for the attacking party. On play being resumed, Butterworth' b side soon had the ball up to their opponents' goal, and scores were made even by the captain. Stimulated uy tins reverse, Tapley's team rallied strongly, but the opposing goal-keeper was equal to the occasion, and Btopped rushes repeatedly. Reynolds came to the rescue, and by fast play put the Tarjleyans again on the defensive. This player put the winning goal^ to the credit of liis side, fiere being no fur-" ther score. The interest the game created indicates that it has came to stay. It was very popular some years ago, but an unfortunate incident which old players will remember brought it into disfavour, and the game was ' allowed to die out.
