M'Comb rode Jupiter to victory in the Winter Cup. Winners at the Grand National meeting incur no penalties in the New Zealand Cup. The Wttirio Club has donated three guineas to the funds of the Birchwood Hunt Club. Lexington was handicapped as a 6min 26sec horse in the race he won at Christchurch in* smin 33sec. It is reported that the Tapanui contingent landed a fair stake when Lalla Rookb landed the Innovation Handicap, two miles, at Christchurch, and paid"£6 16s of a divided. Several Wyndham sports benefited oy Blackberry's win in the Grand National Steeplechase. The last I heard of Senior Wrangler was doing duty as a shepherd's hack in the Lake district. The Winton Guineas tells us that another year has rolled round. Nominations for this, the only classical event in Southland, close at the end o£ this month. Mr John Blomfield does not seek re-election as secretary to the Wairio Jockey Club. Mr Gates has decided upon naming Lady Zetland's colt foal Koromiko, after its birthplace. The Winter Cup winner, Jupiter, first came into prominence by scoring in the Wairio Cup last season, after a smart tussle with Mr Tennant's Sparrow. At the Riverton meeting he enrried everything before him, and the Ellis Bros, were further favoured with landing a couple of good stakes on the metropolitan course at Wingatui by his aid. He is got by St. Clair —Evenirs; Star, by Le Loun —Tangi 11, and consequencly possesses a'strong combination of Musket and Traducer blood, bringing him into the first rank of his sex. This gelding is now live years old, and was bred and roared in the same paddock as the redoubtable Red Lancer by Mr Innes, of TapaDTii, and was one of those that were sacrificed at the sale of yearlings four years ago. There is no doubt that he can gallop very fast up to a mile and a-quarter, and likewise finishes well in all his efforts. His chance in the Now Zealand Cup has been enhanced by his recent victory. The racing season in Southland will be opened with a fixture in" connection with the Birchwood Hunt Club at \Vallacctown Junction, a distance of four- miles from Invercargill, on September 6. The programme consists of three hunters' steeplechases, hunters' jumping competition, mounted riflemen's handicap, flat 'race, and a ladies' bracelet handicap. Minimum weight in all events list 7lb. The management is in the able bands of Mr A. Saunders as secretary, who has done much to make the hunting this season one of the most enjoyable and successful outdoor winter recreations. The Western community is essentially a sporting one, where trots are unknown, 30, given a good day, we should see a large representative gathering enjoying an interesting outing, as much interest is being manifested by the Birchwood followers in what is expected to result in an annual affair. Tom llett is breaking in a, youngster by Berlin Abdallah out of Duchess, which is certainly an advertisement for his sire. Red Peony is the name conferred upon Red Lancer's full sister. Red Ensign, their dam, is by St. George —Red Rose, and I think Mr Quin is to be cong' itulated in keeping up such, a happy style cf nomenclature
