GOLF.

The monthly medal of the Otago Ladies' Golf Club was played for on Thursday, August 3. The weather was fine, but the greens slow. The following are the six leading scores: — Gross. Hdep. Net. Mrs Wheeler .. ..101 26 75 Miss Gibson .., .. 97 14 83 Mrs Ogston „. .. 88 — 88 Miss W. Scott .'. *. 90 — 90 Mrs Piin .. ... ..'lO4 13 91 Miss K. Rattray .. ..95 — 95 The Otago Golf Club played for the St. Andrew's Cross on Saturday. The weather was delightful, but as it was the opening of the new course, all players had to experiment in unknown country. It was the general opinion that none of the players would* succeed in beating Colonel Bogey, but Mr A. H. Fisher is to be congratulated on having succeeded. The best scores were: — Handicap. A. H. Fisher „, .. 9 strokes. 1 up. A. Tapper „, ».-. 3 strokes 3 down. H. Price «; *; 6 strokes. 3 down. J. E. Scott „ w scr. 4 down. M. S. Todd .. .. scr. 4 down. H. D. Stronach .. 6 strokes. 6 down. W. C. MacGregor .. scr. 6 down. THE DUFFER. I do not care how oft he tops His ball or digs the ground ; I do not care how oft he drops In hazards going 'round ; I do not care if in the glen He lands in rushes thick — But I'm sure to lose my temper when He calls a club a " stick." It's not because he poorly plays That I dislike him so; It's not because ho cannot rai3e His ball o'er bunkers low; I mind it not if now and then His drive is but a foot — But I nearly go distracted when He calls a put a " put." I can forgive him for a lot Of faults in form — and more. I don't complain of strokes forgot Jn putting down his score. When six he writes instead of ten, I smile at his dcccit — But I'm mad enough to kill him when He calls a, cleek a " cleat."
