ROXBURGH.
August 14. — The clays are sunshiny at present, but at nights we are having very hard frost. We have not experienced sc lengthy a time of hard frost for 26 years. The gun) trees are quite blasted, owing, no doubt, to the snow continuing in a frozen state on the leaves for so long a time. Skating has been the chiei out-of-door amusement this winter, but we are now full up of it. Milling. — Matters are very quiet, the claims being mostly stopped on account of the frost. This explains the small wash-up of the Amalgamated Company. However, we expect a thaw shortly, when things will again hum. Nothing much can eventuate in regard to the dredging boom for. aome time yet. Never
mind, it is coming, and will stop with us for »' considerable time, I prophesy. Earth .Shock.— At about 11 o'clock on Friday" night a very severe shock was feK, nothing serious occurring, however, though nervous people got a bit of a fright. Obituary. — Death has not forgotten us during the past few weeks. Two much-respected residents passed away a few weeks ago, m the persons of Mr Jamos Woodhouse and his wife. Then a promising young man met with a fatal accident whilst working- in the Amalgamated Company's claim, slipping and injuring himself so seriously that he died after a short illness. — On Friday, 11th inst., Mr Henry Toms, of Coal Creek (a, fruit-grower by occupation), aged 62 years, passed away, after a, long, protracted, and painful illness. Much sympathy is felt by all who knew him for his bereaved family. Mr Toms arrived in the district with his wife and two children 82 years ago. The funeral took place to-day, and was » very representative one, showing the esteem in which he was held.
