ROMAREKA.
August 7. — The weather of late has been of a wintry nature, and stock is suffering considerably in the open, but the bush in this locality offers plenty of shelter and feed for the settlers' cattle. Roads. — Our County Council, I see fron? their last report, are Taising special rates for the Catlins Riding. I suppose this can only be done with the concurrence of tho majority of the settlers in that riding. Educational. — Our public school is, I am sorry to say, closed for the present, and the llomareka children are getting longer holidays than was anticipated. lam favoured with the following letter sent to Miss Haydon, our late teacher: — "Romareka, July 7, 1899. — Moved by Mr Campbell and carried unanimously — 'That the Romareka School Committee minute the following resolution regarding the retiring of Miss K. F. Haydon, late head teacher here, That it is with regret we accept of her resignation, while we congratulate her on her new appointment and well deserved promotion as head tc-acber of Nenthorn school ; and that she carries with her to her now destination the best wishes of the committee of this school.' Moved by Mr W. Sproule and carried unanimously — 'That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Haydon." Moved by Mr E. Harrison and carried unanimously — • That it be recorded our felt disappointineut in not being able to show our appreciation personally of a well-merited service during her stay here.' (Signed) John Campbell, chairman; committee — William Sproule, John E. Harrison ; clerk of committee, Edward C. George." A reply has been received from Miss Haydon, in which she acknowledges the unfailing kindness she experienced at the hands of the committee while in charge of the school.
