PHARMACY EXAMINATIONS.

CHRISTCHURCH,. August 3. ~ The first examination under '" The Pharmacy Act, 1898," was held in the four centres on June 20 and 21. The following candidates passed in all subjects : — Auckland : C. E. A. Caidicutt, W. Little, H. W. Manning, R. Muir, T. Thwaith, and H. J. Webber. Wellington : H. H. Abram, W. D. Armstrong, F. Castle, P. C. Dobbel, L. B. James, Mrs M. A. Mackenzie, and W. H. Toohill. Canterbury: E. J. Burt, W. W. M'Kinney, C. W. Pierson, and C. W. Price. , Otago: H. Grocott, H. Humphre}% J. Jeffery, F. King, R. M. Mackay, P. J. 'M'Shahe, W. B. Montgomery, C. B. Morris, B. O'Connor, R. A. Palmer, E. Scott, H. D. Smith, C. L." Thomas, A. W. Thomson, and J. Thomson. D. Coldwell (Wellington) passed in pharmacy, botany, and chemistry ; A. W. J. Mann and D. A. Fulton (Wellington) in pharmacy and botany ; T. Davis and J. Fairley (Otago) in pharmacy and chemistry ; T. J. Quin (Otago) and W. Watson (Canterbury) in botany and chemistry ; H. E. Crease and W. P. Henderson (Wellington) in pharmacy ; M. Long (Otago) in botany ; and G. B. Smith (Otago) in chemistry.

THE GAZETTE. WELLINGTON, August 3. Additional harbour regulations are published in the Gazette, requiring vessels lying at wharves to provide proper gangways and light them at night. A proclamation is published protecting seagulls. It is notified that the next examination of surveyors undei the Land Act will be held on September 5. •The gold returns for the quarter ended June are : Auckland, £157,497 ; West Coast, £102,209; Otago, £130.382; making, with smaller amounts, £390,450. For the half-year the tota-l is £750,499, against £527,518 last year. The value of imports into the colony for the June quarter was £1,616,782. against £1,517,028 in 1898. Auckland imported £358,647; Wellington, £468,195; Christchurch, £275,200; Dunedin, £312,064. The exports for the June quarter were valued at £2,851,745, against £2,361,572. Auckland's share was £409,614 ; Wellincton, £345,597; Napier, £165,655; Christchurch, £674,011; Dunedin, £357,114; Bluff, £259,452. The Governor has recognised the provisional appointment of Mr C. W. Rattray as vice-consnU.at Dunedin for Portugal and Denmark. Mr J. J. M. Hamilton, of Christchurch, is gazetted Deputy-Public Trustee, and Mr A. K. Duncan, who has been acting in Mr Martin's absence, takes charge of the Christchurch branch. The Public Trustee has taken possession of an unclaimed section in Linwood, Christchurch.
