VOLUNTEERS.
An inspection of the Highland Rifles by th» commanding officer took place on Tuesday, 25th ult. The company were exercised h$ Captain Stoneham, Lieutenant Evans, Ser-i geants Harper, Gillan, and Fraser. At thef conclusion the election of two recruits took place. The captain notified that practice by the various sections for the sectional compos tition, which takes place shortly, would commence in the course of a fortnight. The list of names for the new volunteer company at Hampden has been sent in with, 67 signatures of those willing to join. This is a greater number than is required to form a company. It is intended to ask Mr Parker: (a nephew of Lord JKitchener's), who is res£» dent in the district, to take the captaincy.— North Otago Times. A meeting of the Dunedin District Non-conl-missioned Officers' Club was_ held in the Gai-f rison Hall on Thursday evening, Vice-president j Sergeant-major Henry in' the chair. There*, was a good attendance of members, all branches of the service being represented. Brigade-sur-geon Lieutenant-colonel De Lautour gave a j lecture on " Medical Aid in Peace or War," and at the close was accorded a very hearty vota of thanks for his "instructive and interesting address. Mr Trenwith, M.L.A., made a most impasi sioned appeal to the people of Flemington (says the Argus) to vote for the _Common- : wealth Bill. The member for Richmond waa generally admitted to have surpassed himself; i the large meeting being completely carried away by his eloquence and fervour. In" the. oourse of hia peroration Mr Trenwith waa so moved that he broke into tears, and finished his speooh with difficulty. ' • Stone's Otago and Southland A.B.C.
