LOA VALLEY

July 24. — We have experienced real Antarctic /weather here during the past three weeks. "We have had four falls of snow, amounting in the 'aggregate to a considerable depth in inches, tho 'last fall, which came yesterday, being the heaviest. The frost has also been very severe during the last three weeks, being on several nights the' hardest we have experienced since 1895. If a sudden thaw were to set in, there would be a big flood in the rivers and creeks of this part of .Otago. Sickness. — The measles has been visiting our families in this district for the last two or three months, and children and tho few adults whom it attacks seem to take them very bad — a fact no doubt due to the intensely cold weather. It is seldom we are visited with this kind of trouble, it being about 16 years since measles was here before this winter. Gun Club. — The local club held a pigeonshooting match on the 24th ult., at which a goodly number of sportsmen and others were present, a good afternoon's sport beinjg proirided. Another match is to be held on August ■ 12, when good prizes willbe offered, and no doubt will be well competed for, as was the case »t the last match. As this is the time of year when there is very little work going on in the farming districts, I expect to see a big lot of entries, which would tend to give this young club a start.
