MONDAY, JULY 31.

It is stated that a sum will be placed on the Supplementary Estimates, to be devoted^towards the cost of sending a team of Now Zealand marksmen to next year's shooting contests at Bisley. Major Sommeryille was in Wellington last week in connection with the matter, and had several conferences with Polonel Penton, who has agreed to take charge • Df th» proposal to send a team. He intends to cable Home at once for a dozen of Fraser's marksmen's rifles, bo tbal the men selected to represent the colony may have pai opportunity of-practising with them before leaving. The idea is to send 12 men, the seven highest aggregates at the next meeting of tho New Zealand "Rifle Association to have the first light to form, part of the team. It is hoped that Lieutenant-colonel Collins will be able lo accompany the team as manager. THE MARINE INQUERY. The commission of inquiry into the irregularities in. tho Marine department was to have presented its report by to-day. It is, however, not yet ready, and an extension of time for a fortnight has therefore been granted. It is expected that the report will be in the hands of the Governor in. a day or two. It will probably go in tho direction of practically exonerating Ministers, slightly censuring Messrs Glasgow and AiLport, throwing the bulk of the blame on Captain Allmam aatd Yon Schoen, and exonerating Captain Edwin. The commissioners are still in conference in the Municipal Buildings.
