The Ckess Association* • FIRST MEETING~OF THE COUNCIL. At the first meeting of the New Zealand Chess Council, Mr C. W. Benbow, vice-president, occupied the chair. The following delegates were present:—Messrs W. Mackay (Auckland), J. A. Connell (Canterbury), E. W. Petherick (Palmerston North), A. H. Todd (Oamaru), W. B. Tait (Otago), A. I. Littlejohn (Wellington), W. Brown (Wellington Working Men's Club), and F. K. Kelling (Napier), the last-named acting as hon. secretary. After some discussion it was decided to hold the next championship meeting in Wellington at Easter. 1900. A proposal by the Canterbury representatives to hold the meetings at Easter and Christmas alternately was lost by 9 to 4 votes. • The Otago N delegate gave notice of motion that after the. Auckland meeting has taken place, future championship meetings should be held iv the North and South Islands alternately. A proposal to invite his Excellency the Governor to accept the office of patron was adopted unanimously. The New Zealand Mail was, on the motion of Mr Conuell, appointed the association's official organ so long as Wellington was the headquarters of the association. The Otago Club's proposal to consider the advisability of holding a series of telegraphic matches .-between the various affiliated clubs was losjf; but the question of drafting rules for the guidance of ail clubs engaging in telegraphic contests was relegated to the sub-com-mittee on rules. It was unanimously decided to revise the association's rules and to adopt up-to-date playing rules for uniform use throughout the colony. Messrs Connell, W. Mackay and F. K. Kelling were appointed a sub-committee to present a rough draft at the September meeting. "Votes of thanks were accorded with enthusiasm to the chairman, to the Otago delegate, and to the hon. secretary for their valued services.
