CANTERBURY.
At an open-air meeting held in Cathedral square on Saturday evening an emphatic opinion was expressed on the action of Mr Stratford in inflicting only nominal fines an tho (Jlutha sly grog-seller who was con%icted of a third oll'ence. It was held that the case should receive tlie immediate attention of Parliament, ;is the meeting considered that the whole administration of the prohibition law in the Cluthn would be endangered if there were any further similar encouragement to the breakers of the law. The death is announced of Mr Robert Rutherford, aged 52 yenr,«. He arrived in the colony with his f.iHier in 1860, and settled at Leslie Hills, Aimtn. He v. as a keen sportsman, and owned M-veral f imous racehorses, including Faugh .i Boilai;!^ the Grand National Steeplechase winner.
SOUTHLAND. On Friday Prank Waldron, a young maa^ was committed for trial* at the Supremo Court, Invercargill, for indecent assault and attempted rape of a girl under the age of16, at Makarewa. George D. Newman, who was sentenced! to three months' hard labour for false pretences at Invercargill, has been committed • for trial for forgery.
