Useful Domestic Hints.
If you have a florid complexion, you may with advantage wear a dull red hat. An excellent remedy for a sore throat in the winter is a tablespoonful each of honey and glycerine and the juice of a lemon mixed together. A wedding breakfast begins with soup, but all the other dishes are cold — on the same lines as a ball supper. The cake should be in the middle of the table.
When making stews or soups, the onions should be fried before being put into the stewpanr the improvement in the flavour is surprising. If a teaspoonful of lemon juice is added to the "water that pastry is made with, it will be found to make it rise in flakes, and be much whiter and lighter. To treat damp feathers, throw a handful of salt on thd fire, and hold the feathers over, shaking them vigorously. Don't put them so near the fire that they will burn. 1 To whiten a doorstep, mix a little quietlime with half a pint of skim milk. Wash the stsp first, and then smear with this mixture. Have you ever tried putting Just a little whiting in the water in -which you rinse your silver every day? If this is done it will not ne^d cleaning so often. To remove old stains on silver, try mixing the whiting with ammonia and water. If this does not remove them, make a thin paste of sweet oil and -whiting, and rub till they disappear.
