DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The Dunedin Horticultural Society's prize schedule for the coming season is now to hand. Being now affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society of England, that society's medals will be competed for at the various shows. The society commences the year with a roll membership of 450. It should be noted that at all the shows cut flowers must be shown in glasses or trays. In connection with the monthly meetings prizes will be offered in January and February. At the Spring Show, for which the prize list totals £59, a number of new classes have been added, including severalintended more especially for ladies. The bronze medal of the Royal Horticultural Society ;s offered for 12 narcissi. At the summer show the prize list totals £95. Here again several new clauses have been added, and besides the R.H.S. silver medal for 12 roses, there is a class in. which five guineas are given for growers of roses outside a radius of 10 .miles from Dunedin. In 1889-90 only £5 was allotted for roses, while this year' the total reaches £31. At the Autumn Show, at which JE96 will be given in prizes, there are again several new classes, including one for a bridal bouquet, and a section for honey. The "V.H.S. bronze medal will be for 12 varieties, cactus, dahlias, and foliage. The committee have decided to leave out the class for cottage gardens this year, owing to the lack of interest taken in the competition. The prize list for the chrysanthemum show has been largely increased, and there are many new classes. The R.H.S._ silver medal will be given for six vases Japanese, three blooms of one variety each. There is also an amateur competition for winter table decoration, in which no flowers are to be used. It should be mentioned that there are prizes at each show for children. There is a long list of donors of special prizes, ranking as honorary members. The society appears to be in a very healthy condition, and the competition for ladies should assist in maintaining interest in the shows.
