Selected Games.

French Defence.

Game in a just-concluded match, which resulted in the victory of Mr E. O. Jones over Mr H. W. Trenchard by seven games to four, at the City of London Chess Club: — Anderssen's Opening.

(a) The French Defence with a move to the good.

(b). This seems inconsistent with the first move, whose merit is that it allows the bishop to go to Q 3 without being dislodged by a Xt at Xt 6.

(c) Doubling a pawn, but leaving White with two bishops against two knights. (d) A strong move, for if Black play P-K 4, B-K 6 eh would win the Q P.

(c) The exchange is unfavourable for Black, but, if he move his rook away, R-K 6 follows.

(f) The finish is very neat and even surprising. White threatens Rx R mate, and in order to this Black must lose his queen. — Morning Post. '

A game just concluded by correspondence between Mr C. Platt, Carlisle, and Mr James Mason.
