AUCKLAND.
■ Two Natives in the Waiotapu district, charged with sheep-stealing from Butcher's Strathmore station, have been committed for trial. Constable Bern stated that during the last three years 2100 sheep had been lost from the station. Many of these died from natural causes, but a considerable number were unaccounted for.
Dr Kenny has drawn the attention of the Rotorua Town Board to the presence of a poisonous plant, Datura stramonium, which grows prolifically in the neighbourhood of the lake. The board has given instructions to have the plant destroyed wherever it appears.
Eva Harris, daughter of a Tenanamoa settler, was badly burned by her clothes catching fire near a copper fire.
A domestic servant named Elizabeth Hill, 21 years of age, has been arrested on a charge of abandoning her female child on the doorstep of the Infant Home, Parnell, on April 7. She was remanded on bail, Detective Grace saying that another person was implicated.
Mrs Kathleen Ridling, of Richmond, has been arrested on a charge of throwing acid in the face of her sister, Mrs Ellen Hannah, Paget street, in the course of a dispute.. Mrs Hannah lias been taken to the hospital. She is badly burned about the face, and will pi'obably lose the sight of an eye.
At the Supreme Court Henry Hillmen, a Maori, was sentenced to five years' hard labour for an indecent assault on a Maori girl aged 12.
The post mortem on Mrs Carroll, whose husband is in custody for causing her death, showed that death resulted from severe injuries, which might have been caused by a fall or repeated blows. The inquest stands adjourned till Thursday.
The telegraph chess match between Wellington and Auckland, 15» boards, which has occupied three nights, was concluded on Saturday night. Of the completed games, Auckland has won 7£ and Wellington 2£. Five games remain unfinished, and ar"e to be adjudicated upon. It is probable the final result will be: Auckland, 10 wins ; Wellington, 5.
