PEIZE TALE COMPETITION.
The Proprietors of the Otago Daily Time* and Witness beg to announce that a Prizi Tale Competition on the same lines as thai of last year will be held in connection with their Christinas Annual, to be published at the end of the current year. The tales will again be profusely illustrated, a fact which necessitates the MS. being in oui hands somewhat earlier than would, otherwist bo necessary. The illustrating will be placed in competent hands, and as the whole * su« will be printed on super-calendar paper, thii feature of the Christmas Annual may aga>3 be looked forward to as one of special interest. Ten prizes will be awarded, ranging fror £! to 10s, and totalling £27 10s.
THE PRIZE TALE COMPETITION"; will extend from April 1 to June 30, anil PRIZES TO THE VALUE OF ;£27 10s wi.l be offered as below : —
Tenth Prize 0 10 0 And the proprietors reserve to themselves the right to use any other tale in the competitionat the same rate of remuneration the 10th prize.
CONDITIONS OF THE PRIZE TALE COMPETITION. No tale to exceed 3000 words in length. While Colonial subjects will have the preference, the Plot need not necessarily have a Colonial Foundation. Each tale to be accompanied by a speciallywritten description of the chief character or the chief incident, which will be placed by the publishers in the hands of a competent artist to be sketched for reproduction as a half-tone engraving. As an alternative to this a sketch of the character or incident would be acceptable. The judging will be placed in the hands of a thoroughly competent and independent authority, and the announcement of the awards will, if possible, be made a month after the close of tho competition. All MS. to have a norn de plume attached, and to be accompanied by a, sealed envelope addressed to the Editor of the Otago Witness, containing the writer's name and address, the name of the tale, and the nom_de plume attached to the MS. This envelope will remain unopened until the receipt of the awards frorc the judge. All tales to be original and tho bona fida work of the writer.. MS. to be in the Editor's hands not later than

tar Contributors are particularly requestefl to write. plainly and legibly, and on neat, clean paper, m the event of their tales not being typewritten. With so much MS. to go through, carelessly-written tales cannot possibly be given the same amount of consideration as easily-read MS. or typewritten copy. MS. written on paper printed on one side, or written in pencil, will not be considered at all, as it is impossible to send such r-nnx; to. ijbg linotype operators.
