MERCANTILE MARINE SUPERINTENDENTS.
WELLINGTON, May 31
The following have been appointed to the positions as superintendents of mercantile marine and examiners of masters and mates at the principal ports: —
Captain Smith, of the Omapere, at Wellington. Captain Fleming, of the Flora, at Dunedin. Captain Marciel, at Lyttelton. W. D. Reid, chief officer of the Hauroto, at Auckland. The salary is £250 per annum.
Captain Charles Fleming, who will be stationed at Dunedin, joined the Union Company's service on the 22nd of November, 1884, as chief officer of the Tekapo, and was appointed master of the Taupo on the 22nd May, 1889. He afterwards had command of the Taviuni, Ovalau, Pukaki, Omapere. Hau-
roto, Rotorua, Tarawera, Wakatipu, Wanaka, and Flora. He is 40 years of age. Captain George G. Smith, who will be stationed at -Wellington, joined the Union Company's service in,/ 1891, when he came to the colony in charge of the Ovalau. After serving some time^as first officer of the Rotokino, he was in/turn in command of the Corihna, Wairarapa, Wakatipu, Dingadee, Rosamond, Pohefua, Wanaka, Te Anau, Rotomahana, Hauroto, and Omapere. Ho was in charge of the Wakatipu when that steamer ran into and sank the Laira at the Rattray street wharf. He is 45 years of age. William Douglas Reid is a native of Auckland, and joined the Union Company s ser■vice in. 1891 as fourth officer of the Hauroto. He has been chief officer of the Rotokino, Pukaki, and Ovalau. »
