POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
(From Ottr Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 31. Efforts are being made in Gisborne to get Mr Fitzroy, Mayor of Hastings, to oppose the Hon. Mr Carroll. Mr Fitzroy is an excellent stamp of man, -who would be a great acquisition to Parliament. Afc last election he made a good fight against Mr Carroll, and there is a pretty general conse sus of opinion that he could now win the seat. If Mr Joyce, an ex- publican, stands, as he says he will, Mr Carroll would certainly be defeated by Mr Fitzroy. Mr Fitzroy has, however, not yet decided to come forward, but he has been lately in Gisborne, where he received many offers of support. He will give a definite answer in a week or two.
Mr Guinness lias practically abandoned geddonism, and next session he will probably be in opposition. Mr Seddon, from all accouuts, is not having a very good time in the North Island, and Mr Edwards, his organising secretary, is meeting with but scant support in Wellington province. The general expectation is that the coming session will be a short one, but the matter lies largely with the Opposition. It will be long or short, jusfc as they please. They have plenty of good ammunition with which to bombard the enemy, and in the absence of Messrs Ward and John M'Kenzie, the Premier's defence must necessarily be somewhat weak.
