WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION ACT.

LONDON, May 29.

Mr Chamberlain has pointed out, in a letter to the press, that 70,000 workers who previously had no claim have been compensated under the Workmen's Compensation Act. He says that doubtless the act will be extended to more trades.

PLUMBERS' AND GASFITTERS' DISPUTE.

CHMSTCHURCH, May 30. The Conciliation Board came to a decision last night on the cases submitted to it by the Plumbers' and Gasfitters' Union for the establishment of an industrial aeree-

ment. The recommendations of the board grant - nearly all - the- union- • asks -for. Plumbers' wages are to be 10s a day of eight hours, a certificate of competency to be in the possession of the Drainage Board. Gassfitters, when employed only as such, are to be paid 9s per day. Improvers arc to be admitted at a minimum rate of 8s a daj- of eight hours, a committee from employers and employees to say when improvers shall cease to work as such, and in the event of the committee failing to agree, : the chairman of the Conciliation Board for the time being to decide. Overtime and payment for holidays is the same as was asked by the union, and the section is added to the clause that any work required to be done to an employer's plant or works at any time to be paid for at ordinary rales.. Travelling allowances are provided for as asked, also conveyance to outsidt lobs, with the addition that the suburban limit for men walking to their work i.s to be one mile from the town .belt to the nearest place at which work is to be carried on. Men are to be paid at the shop in recognised working hours or on tlie job, ' at | the employer's option. The proportion of • apprentices and their rates of pay are recommended as asked in the reference clause." An industrial agreement is to be entered' into on or before June 7, 1899, to operate: until June 7, 1901. . -
