MAJOR MARCHAND.

THE NATIONALIST AGITATION.

PARIS, June 1

Frantic crowds greeted Major Marchand's return to Paris. A State carriage ornamented with wreaths and tricolour flags, conveyed the explorer to the office of tLo Ministry of Marine, where he was entertained at luncheon, the Government striving to monopolise the reception so as to prevent developing a Nationalist demonstration.

A great meeting of Nationalists supported M. Deroulede's agitation in favour of a plebiscitary republic.

June 2.

Boundless enthusiasm was displayed in the city towards Major Marchand, and his reception resembled the demonstration on the occasion of the Czar's reception. The ladies almost smothered "Major Marchand with flowers, while the crowd hailed him as the " Conqueror of Fashoda." MM. Lockroy (Minister for Marine), Brazza (Governor of the French Congo), and other notabilities overwhelmed him with congratulations. Major Marchand's attitude was dignified and reserved. He received a sword of honour at the hands of Presi"-* dent Loubet, who accorded him an interview, and the Chamber of Deputies passed him a vote of thanks.
