AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL NETTS.
Large numbers of sheep still continue to arrive at Lyttellon from the Bjhrth Island. The steamers Elingamite and Kotomahana between them landed over 1200 sheep on Sat-
uruay. i A correspondent to an Invercargill paper states tlmt a line of 600 lambs bred-on Castle Rock estate was trucked from Lumsden on Tuesday last to the order of a Canterbury buyei. They were a splendid lot in prime condition, and, from the opinion passed by an expert, would be hard to beat. Such being ' the ease they will, although bred in South-, land, probably reach London and be sold as "prime Canterbury." r I Deplorable accounts' of the agricultural prospects of Riverina are given in. the Wagga Advertiser. Its Tooyal correspondent, writ- j ing under .date May 15, says:— There is scarcely' a possible hope left now of our escap- j ing such a winter in these districts as will be 1 remembered by all for the remainder of our , lives. All sdgns of grass are burned off, and '; the bare red ground is all that is left for starv- j ing stock in most place*. People who have • not finished «o\vlng their crops are refraining ] from doing so, as it is hopeless to do it with- ', out lain.- In many places where wheat was '< sown and nprang U p after the showers whicli j we had in April, it is now withering off for the want of moibturo, and already Pome are ' preparing to sow over again. Those who * have no ?eecl of course cannot do so. If the drought continues, as appears probable at present, what are those unfortunate farmers to do who li-we obtained seed wheat from the Goa eminent at a cost of nearly 4s per bushel when the inevitable pay day comes, and the seed has rolli*' in the ground? ! According io an Auckland telegram, two natives from the Waiotapu district were re- , cently charged with sheep stealing from Butcher's Strathmore station and were committed for trial. Constable Bori> stated that durnig ' the last three years 2100 sheep had Been lost ; from the station. Many of these died from \ natural causes, but a considerable number | were unaccounted for. The following should be of- special interest ■ to owners of dairy ■'cattle:— It has been an- ' nounced too soon that Dr Bra, a disciple of Pasteur, has- discovered a cure for cancer. "He claims nothing of the kind," says the ; Paris corespondent of the Daily News, "but j he sets up to have ascertained the cause of j the disease. In his opinion, the parent of j cancer is a low and microscopic fungus, the ascomycetus. It is cylindrical,' and the 12millionth of a millimetre in diameter. It bursts like a puff-ball, -scattering capsules that have a spiral motion, and that fix themselves round it. They in turn proliferate, and so on. ■ | Dr Bra ha*; cultivated this alga in sterilised milk, plightly sugared. He found the growths resulting from inoculation identical with cancer, but so far he has not discovered that mo- | culation with tamed virus secures immunity. I The ascomycetus appears as dust to tho naked eye. It infests meadows, ready to be mown, j wheat fields nearly ripe for the reaping hook, ! i and often survives in hay lofts. Cows are j thus not unfrequentlv its victims,"
