UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.
The ordinary meeting of the University Debating Society was held in the chemistry lecture room on Friday evening. M. F. Stephens, A.0.5.M., was in the chai», and ♦here was a large attendance. The question debated was "Is it Advisable to Form an Amateur Athletic Association in Connection , with the University." Mr Cowie led for the affirmative, and was supported by Mr Alec, fhompson. Mr G. H. Thomson replied in the negative, and was seconded by Mr W. lv. Moore. It war. arsrued for the affirmative ■
that some kind of association, was neee&sary to arouse the interest of the students in the "clube, and to put them on a better footing. The negative side argued the impracticability ol union, and stated that the enthusiasm of individual clubs should keep them alive. Other speaker? adduced the Students' Association as an example of the success of auch a move as was contemplated, and considered that strong clubs should help the weaker one«. On the whole the debate was not as animated as jt should have beei. considering the importance of the subject. On a vote being taken the affirmative side were found to have a substantial majority. Earlier in the evening Miss Marie Landols gave a spirited recitation, jVh«s Biuichop played a. pleasing pianoforte solo, and Miss Allen contributed a very , ci.jcyable sor.g. All these items were heartily applauded. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
