THE RELIGIOUS COLUMN.

Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, is mentioned by the Melbourne Argus as being favoured by a number of leading Victorian churchmen for tho bishopric of Ballaral, shortly to become vacant.

At tho recent Whitsuntide ordinations of the Diocese of Manchester, Mr W, A. R. Fkchett, 8.A., Cambridge, son of Dean Fitchett, was ordained to the diaconato by the Bishop of Manchester, and has been appointed to a curacy tit Bury, Lancashire.

We (Alexandra Herald) are sorry to learn that the Rev. Mr Lothian has sent in his resignation for next meeting of the presbytery, on account of physical inability to carry on any longer the work of this extensive charge, where ho has laboured for so many years.

The Christian Endeavour Union are arranging for their annual convention to be held in Knox Church on Saturday, June 10. A list of bpeakers is being prepared, and every effort will be made to render the convention of 1899 tho most successful in tho history of the union.

Canon Richards, warden of Selwyn College, in tho " New Zealand Guardian " for June (which, by the way, contains many items of interest) states that the treasurer, after taking account of the income from all .sources, reports a probable deficit of £60 for the year. — Referring to the proposed Church Council, our contemporary says : "It will, in Dunedin, be different from one in Wellington, which is sectarian. The Dunedin Council has nothing to do with theological questions or matters of church organisation, dogma, or any matters peculiar to any religious body. Thus, unless its constitution departs from the resolutions at the first conference to form the council, it will be not only^ possible, but desirable, that Anglicans should take part in this great moral and social upheaval."
