DRUM MAJOR.
" Phaeton " in Auckland Weekly News says : It is rarely that we see such a fine stamp of the thoroughbred horse iv the ranks of the hurdle-racers as is Drum Major. As the big son of Cuirassier btrutted round the enclosure at the Takapuna meeting, he was carrying himself in a manner remindful of his sire, and with much of that king-like look about him that marked his parent ho stood out in bold relief from his opponents. Frank Burns, who, it maj r be remarked, had not ridden Drum Major eince he steered the big fellow to victory at Ellerslie last month, was again entrusted with the mount, and the resolute and determined manner in which the dapper little horseman at all times handles _a horse, it was not hard to discern, suited Drum Major. Burns sent the big fellow at the fences in very bold style, and this style of handling eeemed to give the son of Cuirassier the confidence to take off and fly his hurdles in the most approved style. It is a great pity that such a fine horse and truly promising hurdle-racer as Drum Major could not be left until five years old to mature, for there is just a danger that by taxing him unduly at three years old his owners may lose his services at a time when he should be at his best.
