RELIGION IN SCHOOLS

The religious bodies are prosecuting their efforts under -difficulties to teach religion in the State schools. There are in Melbourne and suburbs between 200 and 300 instructors at work, and some 15,000 or 16,000 scholars being instructed. The main .difficulty arises in this way. Under the present method the time allotted is the last half-hour in the afternoon, and those scholars not attending religious instruction are di&missed, thus practically penalising tho&e who remain. The Council of Churches lias resolved to bring these and other grievances of a like nature under the notice of the Minister for Public Instruction, and to urge that, as an alternative to the time now granted, the last half-hour in the morning should be given ; and, further, that those who do not attend religious instruction should be taught in secular subjects, thus securing that all scholars be dismissed at the same time.
