On Friday Mrs Hanson Turton gave a small afternoon tea of a novel description at her residence, Mornington, which proved not only thoroughly enjoyable, but also most instructive. Each lady invited had been requested to wear a badge representing the name of aome popular work of fiction, •without divulging the representation to any one to bo present. Tea was served in the dining room. After whicb bha soifisfct as-«
sembled in the drawing room, and each one wrote out the names of as many of the badges worn as possible, and also which lady she considered wore the most original badge. Two prizes were then awarded, one to the lady who had named the greatest number ot books correctly represented by the badges, the other to go to the lady who secured the greatest number of votes for the most original badge. The former was won by Miss Alice Shand, who named 15 books correctly, and Miss Gertrude Rattray secured the latter, her badge being a most original representation of " The Choir Invisible." Amongst those present were Miss Elsie Salmon, the Misses Turton, Miss Bathgate, the Misses Williams, the Misses Rattray, Miss Macassey, Miss Sise, the Misses Shand, Miss Butterworth, Miss S. kenzie, etc.
On Saturday evening Miss Sise gave a most enjoyable " high tea " at her residence in Queen street as » farewell to Mr Jack Ritchie, who leaves for England this week. About 20 young people were present, amongst whom were Miss Sise, the Misses Williams, Miss Florence Mills, Miss Alice Fraser, Miss Ruby Roberts, Miss C. Neill, Miss M'Lean, Miss De Lautour, Mr R. Sise, Messrs George Russell and Jack Ritchie, Mr Mackey, Mr Goodlet, Mr J. Roberts, Mr Brown, etc.
Miss Ruby Neil] gave a small girls' afternoon tea on Tuesday as a farewell to Miss Batchelor.
Miss Batchelor is to be married to Mr Godfrey Baldwin in' All Saints' Church on Tuesday, June 13.
On Wednesday, June 14, Miss Brenda Coughtrey is to be married to Captain M'Beath in St. Peter's Church.
Members of the Kakanga Club will be pleased to hear that its pleasant weekly meetings are again to be held during the winter months, i The presidents for this season are Mrs Stilling, Miss Fanny Rattray, and Miss Bartleman, and the opening evening is to be on Monday the 29th, when the members will meet at Mrs J. P. Maitland's house in High street, the three presidents being chairwomen.
Miss Lorna and Miss Lucy Rattray left on Tuesday by the Waikare for Melbourne, where they purpose visiting friends during the winter months.
Mrs George M'Lean, who has been paying a short visit to Wellington and Christchurch, has returned to Dunedin.
Mrs Handyside, who had been visiting Mrs Roberts at Littlebourne House foi a short time, returned to Wellington province last week.
Miss Elsie Salmon, from Auckland, arrived last week, and will stay in Dunedin some months as the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Hanson Turton.
