SOME NOTABLE ENDINGS.
Great interest was shown by the spectators in the " Fife " game between Ferric and Gardner. Position:— Black (Ferric): 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13. White: 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 32. Black to play. 6 10, 18 14, 10 17, 23 18, 17 22, 18 14, 22 26, 14 9, 26 31, 9 6, 31 26, 6 1, 7 10, 32 28, 10 14, 1 6, 4 8, 6 9, 14 17, 9 .14, 26 23, 14 21, 23 16, 21 25, 16 19, 24 15— Ferric won.
Birkinshaw, the- old Leeds player, drew in capital style a critical ending with Scott. Position:—Black (Birkinshaw): 12, 24, 26. White (Scott) : 21,"' 32, king 15. Black went 12 16, 15 18, 26 31, 18 23, 24 27, 21 17, 16 19, 23 16, 31 26— Drawn.
Freedman, with the White side, scored a win off "Wray in the " Double Corner." The following shows how it was done: — Black: 2, 6. 7. 8, 10, 14. 15, 16, 19. "White: 13. 17, 21,
23, 24, 2G, 28, 30, 32. White (Freedman) to play: 26 22, 19 26, 30 23, 16 20, 23 19, 20 27, 32 23, 15 24, 28 19, 7 11, 22 18, and Wray resigned. Battersby won a fine ending off Birkinfihaw in their second game, a " Centre." The following shows how it was done: — Black: 2, 3, 10, 14, 17. White: 11, 19, 21, 25, 26. Black (Birkinshaw) to play: 3 7, 11 8, 14 18-A, 21 14, 10 17, 25 21, 18 22, 21 14, 22 31, 8 3, 7 11, 3 8, and Birkinshaw resigned. (a) 7 11 seems to draw.
The following fine ending occurred between Stewart and Benson: — Position: Black (Stewart)—3, 11, 13. 16, 19, 20; White— lo, 12, 17, 18, 22, 28. White to play: 17 14-A, 19 24, 28 19, 16 23, 14 9, 23 26, 18 14, 26 30, 22 18, 30 26, 9 6, 26 22, 6 1, 22 6, 1 10, and Benson resigned. (a) Some of the spectators thought that 18 14 would have drawn here, but 11 15 appears to win.
Benson in his tie with Henderson won the White side of the " Cross" in brilliant fashion. Position: Black— l, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 14', 19; White— ls, 16, 21 ; 22, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32. Battersby and Atwell had a busy time of it over their second " Nailor." About mid-game the Glasgow man got a man up, and kept it to the end, and scored an easy win. The following is the ending: — Black: 8, 11, 23, 28, king 31. White: 18, 20, 21, king 10. White (Atwell) to play: — 21 17 13 9 9 5 23 U 18 14 812 31 26 26 23 31 26 9 18 31 15 16 17 13 10 14 14 9 28 32 5 1 15 19 23 27 27 31
After -a few more moves -Atwell resigned.' This end game occurred between RI Atwell 1 and W. K. Campbell. Position: Black— 3, ♦ 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18; White— l 7, 20, 21, 23, 2*, 26, 28, 32. White (Campbell) to play; —
A splendid game was contested between Searight and Jordan — a " Second Double Comer."Searight had the Black side, and managed to* get a man up, and even then he had a. difficult job before him. He wrought his men well, and scored one of the finest games played during the contest. The following shows the ending:—Black: 5, 12, 16, 20, 22. White-^ 14; 30, 31, 32. Black (Searight) to play-, Id- 19, 14 10, 19 24, 10 7, 5 9, 7 3, 9 14, 3 7,~ 14 '18! 7 11, 18 23, 11 15, 24 27, 31 24, 20 27. He was able to keep his man, and - compelled Jordan to resign.
