£ood. Broekwell was chosen in place of Hearne in the South of England' team. Howell, Trumper, and Johns stood out of the Australian team.

Grace, whe captained the English team, won the toss and elected to bat, Jones and Noble taking up the attack. The first wicket fell for 11 runs, and the second for 20. Broekwell was neatly taken in the slips. M'Leod* took up the bowling with the score at 43, and Trumble went on at 55, Jones going on again at 69 at the other end. C B. Pry- played a brilliant innings. Five wickets fell for 156. The seventh wicket fell for 166, the eighth for 194, the ninth for 207, and the innings closed for 246. Fry, who was caught in the slips, batted for two hours. He made 10 4's. The Australian fielding was good.

Lockwood carried his bat out for 41. He was in 40 minutes.

No exception -was taken to Jones's delivery, which at times bumped dangerously. Layer fielded magnificently at point.

The Australians in their first innings have last two wickets for 35.

May 9.

The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and a South of England team was continued to-day. Rain fell in the early part of the day, and the weather continued lowering, with-a shifting but fairly good light. Gregory gave a vigorous display at the start, making 11 in one over. Grace replaced Jessop with the ball at 67, and Broekwell went on vice Lockwood at 74, the former getting rid of Hill lbw. Hill and Gregory scored 60 in less than an hour. The total was 96 at the fall of the third wicket. Worrall joined Gregory, and the total was taken to 159.

At the close of the day's play the Australians had lost eight wickets for 357. •

After the luncheon adjournment Lockwood, Townsend, and Grace bowled, but the batsmen played them in the freest style, being* indifferent to all changes. Gregory was missed in the slips when ?ie had made 83, and a moment later .gave another chance at the wickets. He was heartily ' cheered - on- reaching the century. He batted altogether three hours and 20 •minutes. Noble" showed first-rate cricket throughout, displaying a consistent and taking style. • The partnership lasted an hour and 40 minutes, and produced 141 runs.

May 10.

When play was resumed this (Wednesday) morning the weather was warm, but overcast, and the wicket in good order. The attendance was small. Trumble and Jones were bowled by successive balls, the Australian innings closed for 375. Noble carried out his bat for 116. He was three hours at the wickets, without giving a chance.

The weather cleared towards luncheon, at which stage South of England, in the second venture, had lost five wickets for 105. Trumble dismissed Fry by a fine catch in the slips. The departing batsman made all his runs (a dozen) off one over from Jones. Abel fell an easy victim to Trumble. Jessop had a let-off from Hill, who , missed him in the long field. The first wicket fell at 15 -and the third at 46.

Hayward's left stump was levelled in Noble's first over. Grace escaped being run out ' through a bad return by Gregory. The partnership of Ea'igitsinhji and Grace produced 78 runs, and | :)ract ically saved the game. Ranji played brilliant cricket, and his score included 10 4's. He was caught rather easily at point. Trumble displaced M'Leod at 132. He bowled steadily, but runs came fast off Noble. Jones resumed the ball at 150. The innings closed for 222.

Requiring 94 to win, the Australians went to the wicket for the short time available, and lost one wicket fox- 7- runs.
