DEATH OF HANOVER.

The celebrated stallion Hanover, who for the last four seasons headed the list of wining sires in the United States, died in March at Lexington, Kentucky. Hanover, by Hindoo out of Bourbon Belle, by imported Bonnie Scotland, was foaled in 1884, and was, therefore, only 15 years old, but he suffered from gangrenous disease in the foot and ankle, and it \yas found necessary to put an end to his existence. Mr Milton "Young carried no insurance on Hanover, and ihe horse was not chloroformed until he was too weak to stand. The diseased foot was ready to drop off when lie was destroyed. The bone which. had been broken in pawing had all been taken out. Antiseptics had been used freely, and his foot had been kept clean, but still the dead flesh and fibre continued, to slough', and at last one of the arteries in his ankle was attacked and eaten through. Hanover was bleeding to death, and it was humane to shorten the period of his suffering, by the use of chloroform. The crippled foot was a legacy of racing days. He broke down, was retired, and then entered upon- his marvellous Ftud career. Last year 43 of hie offspring won between them 122 races of the value of nearly £24,000. He was the sire of many celebrities, including Hamburg and Ben Holladay. Messrs Dwyer and Croker had several youngsters by Hanover in training in England in 1896, of which Roman Chief was the best. It is said that as much as £20,000 was once offered and refused for him.
