TALK OF THE DAY.

THE BIRTHDAY MEETING.

Writing on Tuesday evening, eight days before the races, and prior to the appearance of the northern horses, I cannot pretend to pick the winners, and my selection must be considered as of simply a conditional nature, subject to revision in the Daily Times of the current day. I take "Visionary for the Hack Race, and "yet do not profess to' be over head and ears in love with her. Glenore and Dundee are my fancies for the Hurdle Race, and of the pair slightly prefer the first-named,'s.who should be pretty well. For the Birthday Handicap there is nothing to be preferred to Double Event when forced to pick so far ahead, since he is one who can be depended on for a good effort, if well, even though the going is heavy. Djin Djin and Malatua are the next best. Jupiter will not start. His mission will probably be the Welter, and this, I think, he will just about win, after a tussle with Clinker. Brisa, Peerage, and Quickshot n ia the order of my fancy for the Tradesmen's, and if this lot is beaten it may be by Edelweiss, though on paper I don't see how she is to live with Brisa. The Maiden Plate will probably be won by Hypnotist after, a race with Benzoin, and Nihilist reads best in the Selling Race, Proposal second best.
