ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER. MARTON, May 1.

At Pahikikura, in the Otamakopu block, on Sunday night, Joseph Monteith knocked his wife down with a slasher and inflicted severe \\ ounds on her face and neck. Whilst down he -wounded her with a gun barrel on the back of the neck. Her son interfered, and Monteith pointed an unloaded gun at him. A constable and doctor were summoned. The woman's depositions have been taken, as she is in a very critical condition.

Joseph Monteith was remanded this morning for eight days on the charge of the attempted murder of his wife at Hunterville on April 30. The police stated that the woman was not expected to recover. Accused said he had no knowledge of com-

mitting the crime, and had suffered for nine [ years from disease in the head. He desired to be sent to an asylum. ;
