In the House of Commons, Mr Chamberilain, referring to the situation in the Tran3- | vaal, said it was impossible to doubt tho '"propriety of receiving the Outlanders' petition, having regard to Britain's relations ! with the Transvaal. . // , I ' May 4. I Fourteen meetings have been held in | Britain in support of the Transvaal UitI landers' petition to the Queen. Twenty- ; one thousand persons in England have al- - ready signed the petition. May 5. It is alleged that 9000 Outlanders in the Transvaal have signed a petition expressing confidence in the Boers. Mr Chamberlain, in a despatch to the Transvaal -Government in reference to the dynamite r onopoly, stated that -the \ monopoly did not benefit the State, bufc \ only the concessionaire. It was also a . breach of the 1884 convention. j Mr F. W. Reitz, the Transvaal Secre- ' \ tary of State, has replied, asserting that the Transvaal had the exclusive right to fix the conditions of the manufacture of dynamite within the Republic, and #iafc i Britain was not justified in protesting. I " May 8. The Daily Chronicle says that Britain, in- ; tends to vigorously compel a settlement of . the Transvaal disputes. / PRETORIA,^ May 3. | President' Kruger's attempt to conciliate . the Rand capitalists at the expense of, the Uitlanders has failed. Both parties now demand the franchise' as a first step in i reform. PARIS, May 5. The Journal dcs Debats condemns Presi- ] dent Kruger's strange obstinacy, and considers Britain's intervention under the circumstances would not be surprising.
