Roslyn v. Mornington.

" The Roslyn and Mornington Clubs met at Montecillo, and, after a fast, open game, the former were victorious by 6 goals to 1. In the first spell Roslyn, playing down hill, soon had Mornington in difficulties, and good play on the right wing let R. Brown score first blood with a good shot. Shortly afterwards a rush by the forwards gave Stables a chance, which he quickly took advantage of. After these reverses the Mornington played up splendidly, and gave the Roslyn backs a warm time defending, Haynes saving several shots in fine style. Roslyn, not to be denied, once more shifted play to the other end of the field, and good passing among the forwards resulted in Stables scoring a beauty with a low shot. Mornington, playing up pluckily, rushed the ball up to the Roslyn goal, where they were awarded a penalty, and M'Donald's kick was successful, Haynes making a fine effort to save.

In the second spell the Roslyn forwards played with fine combination, and, backed up by good kicking from the backs, gave the Mornington a lively time. The defence, however, was very good, and it was not until half of the spell was over that it was broken through, Ussher this time beating the goalkeeper. Roslyn still kept up the attack, and from a scramble in front one of the -Mornington players headed the ball through his own goal. After this Mornington broke away several times, but were always driven back, .ftist before time S. Brown centred well to Ussher, who lost no time in putting through number six for Roslyn. For the winners Haynes played splendidly in goal, while Dodd, R. Wilkinson, and Hiddleston were the best of the other backs. The forwards all played well, their combination being very good for so early in the season. Of the Mornington backs M'Donald played a fine game, and repeatedly saved his side by good kicking. He was well supported by Scoular, Martin, and Allen. The forwards, though a young set, played very creditably, Grey, Anderson, and Sparrow being the pick. Mr A. Jay made a very impartial r.eferee. Scores: — Roslyn .. 6 goals. Mornington 1 goal.
