Notes from Wakaiipu. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
'Arrowtown, April 29.-t-3Ye are once more on the verge of a dredging boom. The Ka-.varau fend Cardrona, -are now being rushed and the Shotover is Jikeiy_ to follow. The Lake County
Press contains columns ■ of advertisements of new applications, the indications being that this time business is -meant. So keen is the demand for ground that jumping has already made its appearance, and claimholders who have held ground for some length of time .without doing work to it had better see to their rights and titles, for when the jumper is abroad nobody can tell when his turn may come. So far as the Cardrona is concerned, it seems to be the favourite field/ as 'the advantages the 1 valley offers are quite exceptional, while the promises of the richness of the ground are quite on a par with, if not in advance of, most of the dredging fields in Otago. The boring operations conducted by Mr G. L. Tacon on his claim near the " old stonp lutt," the* site of the first discovery of gold at Cardrona, have furnished incontestible proof of the richness of the ground as well as of the easy and ready nature of working it.
The Kawarau, that is the portion from the Nevis to the Arrow Junction, is now coming to the fore. The Victoria Bridge dredge, now employed upon the Kawaraxi, is reported to have got on to gold of the right quality — that is, gold of a coarse nature.
The Arrow Flat Hydraulic Company are about to make another start on new lines with theit race. On Wednesday last the unfinished portions of the race "were laid off in small sections, so that parties of working miners may come in to take contracts on their own behalf. The company at the same time invite tenders for a manager of the works. All this means business, and with ordinary progress in the work, everything should be put in full going order early next spring.
Report has it that the Moonlight No. 2 Company have decided upon going in for reconstruction in order to complete their race. It is, however, not likely that they, will make a start with actual work before the end of the coming winter.
